Charles Tillinghast – Chief Executive Officer, Friend MTS
Joining Friend MTS in August 2013, Charlie Tillinghast is a strategic and resonant leader who has over 25 years of notable executive impact in start-ups, large corporations, and joint ventures. Applying a broad, long-range view of strategic opportunities, he backs his vision with practical implementation approaches. Tillinghast is known for exceptional people leadership fostering high levels of discretionary effort, loyalty, and job satisfaction.
From 1999 – 2012, Charlie held management positions at MSNBC Interactive News, LLC (msnbc.com), the last eight as President & CEO of the news joint venture between Microsoft and NBC News. At MSNBC Interactive News, Charlie led the portfolio of web properties, consisting of msnbc.com (now NBCNews.com), today.com, nbcsports.com, and three start-ups, to industry leading levels of profitability, audience reach, product innovation, and editorial excellence. In 2003, Charlie launched the first scale, advertising supported news video product and in 2010 led the industry with the first site entirely serving viewable ad impressions. As an organizational leader, Tillinghast fostered the development of a high integrity company culture known for its transparency and respect for all employees.
Prior to MSNBC, Charlie led corporate development for Primary Health, Inc., a venture-backed health care company; served in a variety of management positions at Micron Technology, Inc.; and began his career in a start-up software company, Learned-Mahn, Inc., where he held sales and marketing positions.
Tillinghast is a member of the board of directors of Mixpo, Inc., a multiscreen video advertising platform and service. He was a member of the Online Publishers Association for 11 years and served on its Chairman from 2009 – 2011. Tillinghast is a graduate of Brown University and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Jonathan Friend – Chief Technology Officer
Jonathan Friend founded Friend MTS in 2001 to provide technology to the media industry for better securing valuable intellectual property.
Having spent many years leading the engineering and service delivery functions of the company, Jonathan is now responsible for overall technical strategy and future service development.
Jim Millstein – Board Member
Jim Millstein is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Millstein & Co., a financial advisory firm with offices in Washington, D.C. and New York City. He recently represented US Airways in its merger with American Airlines.
Mr. Millstein previously served as Chief Restructuring Officer at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he was the principal architect of AIG’s successful restructuring and recapitalization. Prior to his tenure at Treasury, Mr. Millstein was Managing Director and Global Co-Head of Corporate Restructuring at Lazard, where he represented a diverse array of clients, including, the United Auto Workers, Charter Communications, the Republic of Argentina, and WorldCom, among many others. Previously, Mr. Millstein was Partner and Head of the Corporate Restructuring practice at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton.
Mr. Millstein received a J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. He holds an M.A. in Political Science, summa cum laude, from the University of California, Berkeley and graduated with a B.A. in Politics, summa cum laude, from Princeton University
Carl Vogel – Board Member
Carl Vogel is a well-respected, experienced executive in the media and telecom business with over 25 years of experience across the cable television, satellite, telecom and content sectors.
He currently serves as the President and the Chief Executive Officer of CCV Holdings Finance, Inc., and CCV Holdings LLC. Mr. Vogel has been an Executive Vice President and the Chief Operating Officer of Comcast Cable Holdings LLC since August 1999 and June 1999 respectively. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of HBC Solutions, Inc. and has been a Senior Advisor to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Dish Network Corp. since March 2009. He has been a Director at RGB Networks Inc. since July 2004, Dish Network Corp. since May 2005, Shaw Communications, Inc. since October 2006, Universal Electronics Inc. since October 2009, Ascent Capital Group, Inc., since December 2009, Nextwave Wireless Inc. since November 2009, Ascent Media Corporation since January 2010, SIRIUS XM Radio Inc. since April 2011, and AMC Networks Inc. since June 2013. He also currently serves as a Director of iBAHN Corporation. Astrolink International L.L.C., Canadian Satellite Communications, and DISH DBS Corporation, and as a Senior Advisor at DISH DBS Corporation. Mr. Vogel serves as a Director of the National Cable Television Association, Cable Labs and Digeo Inc., and Women in Cable and Telecommunications. And he serves as a member of the board of directors of College Sports Television, Oxygen Media, G4, SiTV and The Tennis Channel.
Mr. Vogel holds a B.S. in Finance and Accounting from St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin.
Malcolm Friend – Board Member
Malcolm Friend is Senior Partner of Friend LLP, a firm of Chartered Accountants and business advisors.His clients include successful SMEs, entrepreneurs, banks and venture capitalists, offering financial advice on a variety of issues including due diligence, financial risk management, business planning, refinancing and strategic direction.
He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte & Co in 1971, and is a graduate of the London School of Economics with a Master’s degree in accounting and finance.
Roger Rosen – Advisor
Roger Rosen is the president of Rosen Publishing, an independent publisher that has been providing supplemental educational books and materials to libraries and K-12 schools since 1950. Roger was named president of Rosen Publishing in 1980, and has grown the publishing program to over 1,000 titles per year, across all curriculum areas. Imprints include PowerKids Press, Rosen Central, Rosen Young Adult, Windmill Books, Rosen Classroom, Rosen Online, and Editorial Buenas Letras.
In 2009, Roger purchased Gareth Stevens Publishing to continue that company’s fine tradition of non-fiction and fiction titles for students in grades K-12. Roger also spearheaded the launch of epointbooks, an eBook hosting platform offering over 7,000 nonfiction eBooks for pre-K-12. In addition, Rosen Publishing has developed a program of innovative, multimedia interactive eBooks.
Roger Rosen continues to expand his educational businesses: In March 2013 he acquired the assets of Marshall Cavendish’s North American library operation. He will be growing this list under his new company, Cavendish Square Publishing.
